Clinical safety

The US label carries a boxed warning for fetal toxicity. Risks include hypotension, increased potassium and kidney-function changes; monitoring and medication-interaction review are important, especially with other renin-angiotensin drugs, potassium products, NSAIDs or lithium.

How it works & important distinctions

Candesartan blocks angiotensin II at AT1 receptors after conversion from its prodrug, reducing vasoconstriction and aldosterone effects. This lowers blood pressure and alters cardiac and renal haemodynamics.
