It lowers urate effectively. Cardiovascular history, other medicines and treatment alternatives affect suitability; a uric-acid target alone does not make it a wellness intervention.
Confidence: strong
US labeling carries a boxed warning about cardiovascular death. Liver effects and gout flares require monitoring, and the drug is contraindicated with azathioprine or mercaptopurine.
Febuxostat inhibits xanthine oxidase, lowering production of uric acid. It treats chronic hyperuricemia in gout; it is not a medicine for asymptomatic hyperuricemia.
