What it is
Mechanism evidence: human
Water replaces ordinary overnight fluid losses and supports normal hydration. A special benefit from consuming a fixed volume immediately after waking, beyond meeting daily needs, has not been established.
What it is, why people use it, the evidence, and what to know before trying it.
Mechanism evidence: human
Drinking water after waking is a reasonable way to contribute to daily hydration, but 16–32 oz is a personal routine rather than a clinically established universal morning dose.
Confidence: moderate
Situations where this practice may need modification or professional guidance.
Drinking to thirst is safe for most healthy adults. Excessive rapid water intake can cause dangerous hyponatremia; fluid targets need individualization in heart failure, kidney disease and other conditions requiring restriction.
