What it’s for
- Maintaining hydration
Drinking water after waking as part of daily fluid intake.
Purpose, evidence and practical considerations.
Water is essential, but research does not establish a special health advantage from drinking a fixed large amount immediately after waking.
Confidence: moderate
Drinking to thirst is safe for most healthy adults. Excessive rapid water intake can cause dangerous hyponatremia; fluid targets need individualization in heart failure, kidney disease and other conditions requiring restriction.
Water replaces ordinary overnight fluid losses and supports normal hydration. A special benefit from consuming a fixed volume immediately after waking, beyond meeting daily needs, has not been established.
