The main intoxicating cannabinoid in cannabis products.
Purpose, evidence and practical considerations.
Effects depend on dose, route and the condition treated. It is not a low-risk general sleep aid; regular use, impairment and withdrawal can complicate sleep and daily functioning.
Confidence: moderate
THC can impair driving, memory, coordination, and judgment; it may cause anxiety, tachycardia, dependence, and withdrawal-related sleep disruption. Risk is higher with alcohol, sedatives, pregnancy, adolescence, and some psychiatric or cardiovascular conditions.
THC is a psychoactive cannabinoid that acts mainly through CB1 receptors in the central nervous system. Acute sedation does not necessarily translate into healthier sleep architecture or long-term benefit.
Regulatory status: legal and medical status varies by country and US jurisdiction; some THC medicines have FDA-approved indications, while cannabis products are not federally approved as sleep treatments
