Research suggests short-term benefits for some soreness and recovery measures. Results are not consistent for strength recovery, and they do not establish broad longevity benefits.

Cold water can trigger gasping, hyperventilation, loss of coordination, hypothermia and dangerous cardiac responses. Never plunge alone or after alcohol, enter gradually, and use extra caution or clinical advice with cardiovascular disease, arrhythmia, uncontrolled blood pressure, pregnancy or impaired sensation.
Cold-water immersion rapidly cools skin and superficial tissue, constricts blood vessels and changes nerve signaling and perceived soreness. Post-exercise studies suggest short-term recovery effects, but repeated use immediately after strength training may conflict with desired training adaptation.
