What it’s for
- Aerobic fitness and transport
Riding a bicycle outdoors or using a stationary cycle.
Purpose, evidence and practical considerations.
Regular aerobic exercise supports fitness and health. Effects depend on workload and consistency; a change between two different fitness tests cannot prove the effect of cycling alone.
Confidence: strong
Cycling is usually scalable, but excessive load, poor technique or rapid progression can cause pain or injury. People with symptoms, major medical conditions or long inactivity should choose an appropriate starting level.
Cycling repeatedly loads the cardiovascular, muscular or neuromotor systems. Adaptation depends on the exercise mode, effort, total weekly volume and progression rather than the label alone.
