What it’s for
- Prescription thyroid-hormone replacement
Animal-derived thyroid hormone containing both T4 and T3.
Purpose, evidence and practical considerations.
It provides active thyroid hormones, but its fixed ratio differs from human production. It is not a weight-loss treatment and requires clinical and laboratory monitoring.
Confidence: strong
Dose requires laboratory and clinical monitoring. Excess can cause palpitations, arrhythmia, bone loss and other hyperthyroid effects; coronary disease and older age require caution. Iron, calcium and several medicines can alter absorption or thyroid requirements.
It replaces thyroid hormones using a fixed T4/T3 mixture derived from porcine thyroid. Thyroid hormones regulate gene transcription and metabolism; excess replacement can cause iatrogenic hyperthyroidism.
Regulatory status: prescription drug; current US Armour Thyroid labelling states it has not been FDA-approved as a new drug
