What it’s for
- Studied for endurance performance
Beetroot taken as a powder, juice or food, mainly as a source of dietary nitrate.
Purpose, evidence and practical considerations.
Nitrate can provide small performance benefits in some exercise settings. A tablespoon of unstandardised powder is not necessarily equivalent to the nitrate dose in a trial.
Confidence: moderate
Beetroot can cause harmless red urine or stool and may lower blood pressure. Kidney-stone risk, kidney disease, low blood pressure and interacting medicines warrant caution; antibacterial mouthwash can alter nitrate conversion.
Oral bacteria reduce dietary nitrate to nitrite, which can increase nitric-oxide availability and influence vascular function and exercise efficiency. Product nitrate content and timing materially affect exposure.
Regulatory status: food-derived dietary supplement; not a medicine
