What it’s for
- A repeatable sleep schedule
The appropriate clock time depends on sleep needs, daily responsibilities and circadian timing.
Keeping a consistent bedtime to make sleep timing more regular.
Purpose, evidence and practical considerations.
The appropriate clock time depends on sleep needs, daily responsibilities and circadian timing.
Sleep guidance supports consistent timing. Cohort studies associate regular sleep with better health outcomes, but cannot show that a particular bedtime causes those outcomes.
Confidence: moderate
A rigid schedule can worsen anxiety or reduce sleep opportunity if the chosen time is unrealistic. Persistent insomnia, excessive sleepiness, snoring or suspected sleep apnea need assessment rather than simply stricter scheduling. Shift workers require tailored advice.
Keeping sleep and wake times consistent reduces day-to-day circadian variability and can strengthen time cues for the sleep-wake system. Regularity is distinct from adequate duration, sleep quality and choosing a clock time that fits an individual's circadian phase.

In his November 2025 bedtime account, Johnson described switching off screens, sitting quietly to process the day, and noting concerns to revisit the next morning. He planned to read with only red lighting on in a quiet house.
Source 6 · 7 Nov 2025He described five minutes of breathing, with a four-second inhale and six-second exhale, followed by settling on his side with a pillow between his legs, another to hug and the head of the bed slightly raised. His post described the coming night; its sleep metrics were predictions, not recorded results.
Source 6 · 7 Nov 2025He says he is in bed at 8:30 p.m. and falls asleep within three minutes.
