What it’s for
- Studied for selected skin, pain and tissue conditions
Exposure to red or near-infrared light, also called photobiomodulation.
Purpose, evidence and practical considerations.
Reviews find condition-specific signals with varying certainty. Wavelength, dose and device matter; a useful result in one setting does not establish whole-body rejuvenation.
Confidence: weak
Eye protection and device instructions matter. Excess dose can heat or irritate tissue; photosensitising medicines, eye disease, cancer treatment and pregnancy warrant clinician or device-specific review. Panels are not interchangeable without irradiance and wavelength data.
Photobiomodulation exposes tissue to defined wavelengths and irradiance, with proposed mitochondrial and signalling effects. Dose depends on wavelength, power density, distance, exposure time and treated area; minutes alone are not a transferable dose.
Regulatory status: device-based modality; regulatory clearance is product- and indication-specific
