Coffee can increase alertness, with a sleep trade-off. In the short CRAVE trial, coffee days produced more steps but less sleep and more premature ventricular beats; the primary atrial-beat outcome did not significantly change. This does not establish long-term health benefit.
Confidence: moderate
Too much caffeine can cause insomnia, anxiety, palpitations or stomach upset. Sensitivity varies, and pregnancy, some conditions and medicines change the amount that may be appropriate. Decaffeinated coffee is not caffeine-free.
Coffee can be part of a meal or morning ritual. Caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee differ, and even decaf contains some caffeine. A cup or a reported coffee habit is not a precise caffeine measurement.
