What it’s for
- Meeting vitamin K needs
Menaquinone forms of vitamin K, involved in normal clotting and bone-related proteins.
Purpose, evidence and practical considerations.
Vitamin K has established nutritional roles. Evidence is insufficient to promise that a routine K2 supplement prevents heart disease or fractures in otherwise adequately nourished adults.
Confidence: weak
Vitamin K has a major interaction with warfarin and similar vitamin-K antagonists; large intake changes can alter anticoagulation. Safety and dose interpretation depend on whether the product is MK-4, MK-7 or a blend.
Vitamin K is required to activate clotting and bone-related proteins. Menaquinone forms contribute to vitamin K status, but claims that routine K2 supplementation prevents cardiovascular disease or directs calcium away from arteries remain unproven.
Regulatory status: essential nutrient and dietary supplement ingredient; no separate US recommended intake for K2 forms
