What it’s for
- Relaxation
- Heat exposure
Heat tolerance and health conditions affect suitability. A hotter or longer session is not automatically better, and sauna does not replace physical activity.
Sitting in a heated dry room for passive whole-body heat exposure, usually as a relaxation or bathing practice.
Purpose, evidence and practical considerations.

Finnish observational studies link frequent sauna use with lower cardiovascular and overall mortality. Those associations do not prove that sauna causes longer life. Controlled studies of shorter-term effects cannot establish a universal longevity schedule.
Confidence: weak
Dehydration, overheating, fainting and burns are key risks. Avoid use when acutely ill, intoxicated or dehydrated; pregnancy, unstable cardiovascular disease, impaired sweating and medicines affecting blood pressure or thermoregulation require medical guidance. Very high temperatures increase risk.
Temperature, humidity, time and cooling breaks determine the exposure. Dry sauna differs from a steam room, infrared device or hot bath; findings from one setting should not be turned into a universal heat protocol.
Regulatory status: wellness and heat-exposure practice
