Progressive resistance training improves strength and can increase muscle size. Different goals need different training choices; evidence supports the method without establishing one universal set, repetition or weekly-split prescription.

Poor technique, excessive load or inadequate recovery can cause acute or overuse injury. People with significant cardiovascular, musculoskeletal or neurologic conditions may need adapted programming and professional guidance.
A strength program specifies movements, resistance, repetitions, sets and recovery. It can aim to improve strength, muscle size, muscular endurance or everyday function. Progression means adjusting the challenge as capacity develops, rather than copying another person’s starting load.
